Tree Trimming & Pruning in Burlington County, NJ
Good pruning can make a healthy tree safer and keep it off your roof without cutting it down. Send a request and a partner tree care contractor will contact you to look at it.

What trimming can fix
- Limbs over the roof that scrape shingles, fill gutters and drop debris in storms.
- Deadwood in the crown, which is what most often falls in summer thunderstorms.
- Low limbs over driveways, sidewalks and streets that trucks or pedestrians hit.
- Weak structure such as competing leaders on a young tree, which is much cheaper to correct early.
What good pruning looks like
Professional pruning follows industry standards (in the U.S., ANSI A300). In practice that means cuts made just outside the branch collar rather than flush to the trunk, no more live canopy removed than the tree can handle, and no climbing spikes on trees that are staying. Be wary of anyone offering to "top" a tree, cutting the main stems back to stubs. Topping causes weak, fast regrowth and decay, and is the opposite of what a storm-prone yard needs.
Timing
Deadwood and hazard limbs can be removed any time. Many trees are pruned in late fall through winter, when leaves are off and the structure is easy to see. Oaks are often pruned outside of the warm months to reduce the risk of spreading disease; your contractor can advise on specific species.
Utility lines
Do not prune near power lines yourself, and expect a private contractor to stay back from energized lines unless they are qualified for line clearance. Your electric utility maintains clearance around its distribution lines; for the service drop to your house, call the utility to ask about a temporary disconnect.
Is pruning a substitute for removal?
Sometimes. A tree with one bad limb can often be saved. A tree with decay in the trunk or major root damage usually cannot. Ask the contractor to explain why they recommend one or the other.
