Common reasons Burlington County homeowners remove trees

  • A tree planted decades ago is now far too large for its spot, with limbs over the roof or roots lifting the walkway.
  • The tree is declining: thinning crown, dead limbs, fungus at the base, or bark falling off in sheets.
  • Ash trees affected by emerald ash borer, which has spread across New Jersey since it was first found in the state in 2014.
  • Callery (Bradford) pears, which were planted widely in subdivisions and are known for splitting apart in wind and ice.
  • Making room for an addition, pool, solar panels or a new driveway.

How a planned removal usually works

  1. Site visit and estimate. The contractor looks at the tree, what is around it, and how equipment can reach it. Ask what the price includes: wood haul-away, brush chipping, stump grinding and lawn repair are often separate line items.
  2. Permit check. Several Burlington County towns now require a permit for removing healthy trees above a certain trunk size. Applications often ask for the tree contractor's Licensed Tree Expert or Licensed Tree Care Operator information, so the contractor's help matters here.
  3. Utility mark-out if digging. Removing the tree itself is not digging, but grinding the stump deep or removing roots may be. New Jersey law requires a call to NJ One Call (811) before excavation.
  4. Removal. Depending on space, the tree is felled in one piece, taken down in sections from the top by a climber or a bucket truck, or lifted out piece by piece with a crane.
  5. Clean-up. Brush is chipped, wood is hauled or left in agreed lengths, and the stump is cut low or ground.

Questions to ask the contractor

  • What is your NJTC business registration number, and who is your Licensed Tree Expert or Licensed Tree Care Operator?
  • Can you send a certificate of insurance for liability and workers' compensation?
  • Will you handle the township permit, or should I?
  • Is stump grinding included, and how deep?
  • What happens to the wood and chips?

Cost factors, not price tags

We do not publish prices, because they depend on the tree and the site. Size and condition of the tree, nearby structures and wires, access for trucks or a crane, haul-away and stump work are the main drivers. Getting an estimate in writing that lists each part of the job is the best way to compare.
