When it is an emergency
A tree job becomes urgent when it is causing damage now or is likely to fail soon: a tree resting on your roof, a trunk split at the crotch and leaning toward the house, a hung-up limb over a walkway, or a tree blocking the only way out of your driveway. Send the request marked Emergency or call, and say exactly what the tree is touching.
Safety comes before the saw
- If the tree is on or near a power line, call your electric utility first and keep everyone well back. Lines can be live even when the power is out.
- Call 911 if someone is injured or trapped, if a tree is across a public road, or if you smell gas.
- If water is coming in, a temporary tarp is often the first job; the contractor can tell you whether they can do it or whether you need a roofer.
- Keep people and pets out of rooms under the damaged part of the roof.
What an emergency tree contractor typically does
On a storm call, crews usually work in stages: make the site safe, lift the tree off the structure (often with a crane or by careful rigging), cut it into manageable sections, then come back for clean-up and stump work once the urgent calls in the area are handled. Ask the contractor which stages are included in their price.
Photos and insurance
Photograph the tree and every bit of damage before it is moved. Homeowners policies often treat a tree that fell on a covered structure differently from one that fell in an open yard, and each policy is different, so call your insurer or agent and ask. Keep the contractor's written estimate and invoice for your claim.
Storms are when bad actors show up
After big storms, out-of-area crews sometimes go door to door. In New Jersey, a tree care business must be registered with the Board of Tree Experts and employ a licensed professional, and its advertising must show its NJTC registration number. Be cautious about large cash deposits, and get the price and scope in writing even in an emergency.
What to include in your request
- Your town and street, and whether the tree is in the front, side or back yard.
- What the tree is touching: roof, car, fence, wires or nothing.
- Rough size: a trunk you could wrap your arms around, or bigger?
- Whether a truck can get near it, or whether it is behind the house.
