Mount Laurel's tree removal permit
Under Chapter 144 of the Mount Laurel Township code, as amended in 2024, the township's Tree Removal Permit Application says a permit is needed before removing any tree with a trunk diameter at breast height (DBH) of six inches or greater, or any size street tree. A few details from the township's application that matter to homeowners:
- Applications go to Mount Laurel Community Development at 750 Centerton Road.
- The township says it will approve or deny within 20 business days of a complete application.
- When a homeowner files, the application must include information for the Licensed Tree Expert or Licensed Tree Care Operator doing the removal. That is a good reason to have your contractor lined up before applying.
- Removing regulated trees can trigger replacement plantings or fees under the ordinance's replacement table, unless the tree is exempt.
- Emergency removals are handled differently from planned ones. If a tree is an immediate hazard, document it with photos and talk with the township.
Rules change, so confirm current requirements with Community Development before work starts.
HOA neighborhoods
Many Mount Laurel homes are in communities with homeowners associations, including much of Ramblewood and Larchmont and the townhouse communities off Route 38 and Route 73. In some, the association maintains trees in common areas, and some require architectural approval before a homeowner removes a tree from their own lot. Check your HOA documents as well as the township rules.
Older wooded neighborhoods
Neighborhoods like Rancocas Woods, near the Rancocas Creek, have tall mature trees close to houses. Those removals are often climb-and-rig or crane jobs, and in a storm they are the trees most likely to land on a roof.
Covering all of Mount Laurel
Requests come in from Ramblewood, Larchmont, Rancocas Woods and the townhouse communities off Route 38, and from streets along Route 38, Route 73, Church Road, Union Mill Road, Hainesport-Mount Laurel Road and Elbo Lane (ZIP 08054). The Mount Laurel Township area sits near the Rancocas Creek and its South Branch tributaries, so mention in your request if your property is low-lying or close to the water.
Mount Laurel questions
Do I need a permit to remove a dead tree in Mount Laurel?
Dead, dying and hazardous trees are generally treated differently from healthy ones under the ordinance, but you may still need to document the tree's condition. Ask Community Development before removal, and keep photos.
Can my contractor file the permit for me?
Many tree contractors do, and the application asks for their licensed professional's information either way. Ask during the estimate.
