Medford's tree removal application
Medford replaced its tree chapter in 2024 with Chapter 123, "Tree Removal and Replacement." The township's application form says:
- Anyone planning to remove a street tree with a DBH of 2.5 inches or more, or any other tree with a DBH of 6 inches or more, must submit a tree removal application for review and approval, with listed exemptions such as dead or hazardous trees.
- Clearing more than 1,500 square feet of land, including brush and natural vegetation, also needs approval.
- The application goes to the Zoning Office at 49 Union Street with a survey showing where trees will be removed, a restoration or replanting plan, and a $25 fee.
- The form asks for the name and license number of the firm's LTCO or LTE, so line up a properly licensed contractor first.
- No trees may be removed until officials approve.
Confirm the current rules with the Zoning Office before scheduling work.
Lake communities and wooded lots
In Lake Pine, Birchwood Lakes and around Taunton Lake, many homes sit on sloped lots that run down to the water, under tall oaks and pines. Equipment access can be difficult, and a tree that falls toward the lake can be harder to retrieve. Some lake associations have their own rules about shoreline trees.
Much of southern Medford lies within the New Jersey Pinelands. Oak-pine woods there are prone to stress from drought and from defoliating insects like the spongy moth, and stressed oaks can decline over several seasons. Dead oaks and pines near homes, decks and driveways are common requests.
The village
Around Main Street, older homes with big shade trees on smaller lots mean more climbing and rigging, and street trees that may involve the township.
Covering all of Medford
Requests come in from the Main Street village, Lake Pine, Birchwood Lakes, Taunton Lake and wooded lots in the Pinelands section, and from streets along Main Street, Route 70, Stokes Road, Jackson Road, Tuckerton Road and Hartford Road (ZIP 08055). The Medford Township area sits near the Southwest Branch of the Rancocas and Medford's lake communities, so mention in your request if your property is low-lying or close to the water.
